Part I: The Foundation of Data Privacy

Part I provides the building blocks for understanding GDPR. In this section, we discuss why data privacy has become a pressing global concern and introduce the fundamental concepts and definitions used in the GDPR. We will cover the seven key principles that underpin the regulation, define its scope of application, clarify the roles and responsibilities of data controllers and processors, and explain what constitutes personal data (and sensitive personal data). By the end of Part I, you’ll have a solid grounding in the “language” of GDPR and the rationale behind it, which will prepare you for the more detailed topics that follow.
